The name Roulette is French for “little wheel”, so it should be no surprise at all that many people believe that this game originated in France. Interestingly, many historians believe that the roulette wheel was invented by physicist and mathematician Blaise Pascal. He was attempting to build a machine that would provide a constant source of energy- but instead he created one of the world’s favourite casino features. We consider that fortunate either way.
The first descriptions of Roulette appear in French novels as early as 1796, however the game gained more popularity across Europe in the 19th century. The rules of the game haven’t changed too much since then, leading this simple classic to become the second most popular casino game in the world after Blackjack. When Germany abolished gambling in the 1860s, casino operations moved to Monte Carlo, bringing Roulette along with it. This was where single zero roulette came into popularity, before spreading across Europe. American roulette games kept to the traditional French model, with a double zero wheels giving the house an extra edge.
Baccarat
A favourite card game of the French elite, Baccarat was often played in private parlours from the 19th century until the legalisation of gambling in France in 1907. No one is quite sure where the game was originally invented, though some scholars believe that it was brough to France from Italy some time in the 15th century.
Although it may not have the inescapable global popularity of Blackjack and Roulette, Baccarat is on the rise in popularity. Las Vegas casinos have noted that Baccarat play is on the rise year after year, making this the hottest emerging card trend around. Contrary to the most recent run of movie adaptations, Baccarat is the preferred card game of the world’s favourite spy- James Bond. The famous 007 is seen playing the game in a number of Ian Fleming’s original novels, including Casino Royale, which included a short guide to the game for any readers who were unfamiliar.
